Quest for the Best by Jack Hilton

Limited edition publication.

Quest for the Best is a new book, which for the first time contains the best of Jack Hilton's angling articles, compiled by his widow Ann Hilton.
These include work on carp, barbel, perch, chub, roach and pike, all interspersed with his black and white photographs.
It is illustrated throughout with Tom O'Reilly's fine pen and ink drawings and is designed to be the companion book for Jack Hilton's earlier Little Egret Book, "Quest for Carp"

From the foreword by Chris Ball.
The title of this book is more than apt when I reflect on the late Jack Hilton's unquenching thirst for catching the biggest fish around, because he really was captivated by the best.

Be it chub, dace, roach, barbel, pike and of course carp it was always the biggest that fascinated him. this devote aim of targeting big fish led Jack on a
remarkable journey that grew stronger as time went by.

It was ultimately carp that became his main quarry as the 1960's unfolded with his pilgrimage taking him all over southern England before he became intoxicated with the big carp Mecca, Redmire Pool, where from 1968 until he stopped fishing in 1975 he spent almost all of his angling time.
There are two important parts to Jack's angling life, first of all his spectacular catches. He banked chub to over 7lb, barbel over 11lb, pike to well over 20lb, big roach, big perch including an enormous 4lb 6oz specimen in October 1966 and then there were the carp. Between 1967 and 1972 Jack Hilton figured in almost all of the top ten carp captures for those years including topping the lists 1967 and 1971...halcyon days indeed.  By 1971 he became the first man in England to capture three carp over 30lb, a fact recorded by Garcia-Mitchell reels (Jack's favoured make) with a specially struck Gold Medallion besides the gift of a Mitchell 410 presentation reel...
