Big Fish from Small Streams

Big Fish from Small Streams

by Tony Miles

This is a book about Tony’s lifetime love affair with chasing big fish from intimate little rivers and streams. Since his first chub in 1959 from the tiny Warks Leam, small stream specimen hunting has been Tony’s favourite. In the 54 years since, some remarkable specimens have come his way, notably giant barbel, chub and perch from the upper Ouse.

Tony explains his methods of tracking down elusive specimens of most species in the readable and entertaining style that has become his trademark, and in the many photographs of huge fish you will see the potential rewards for following his advice.

Little Egret Press are privileged and delighted that Tony has agreed to share his experiences and advice on catching big fish from small rivers and streams, a subject on which relatively little has been written for many years. You will find it hard to put the book down and we confidently predict that it will attain the same cult status as Tony’s previous books.

Tony Miles is one of our best known specimen hunters and has been one of our most prolific angling writers since he penned his first article to Angling Times in 1967. It was the same year that he founded the famous Coventry Specimen Group, which brought together household names in the big fish world, such as Phil Smith, Merv Wilkinson and Trefor West. Tony Miles’ interest is in big fish of all coarse species, except eels. He writes with authority about all of them, his personal best list having few equals.
Tony has been writing regularly for the angling press ever since, and in that time has contributed almost 1000 articles to both the monthly and weekly titles in the UK as well as in Europe. His first book was released in 1987 and has been followed by a further fourteen titles in his own name, plus the classic “Quest for Barbel”, which was co-written with Trefor West and is now on its third reprint. Tony has also contributed guest chapters to 17 titles by other authors. Little Egret Press was proud to publish “Elite Barbel” in 2004, widely acclaimed as a modern classic, a reprint of “My Way with Chub” in 2005, recognised as the leading authority on chub fishing, “The Carp Years” in 2006, a look back on forty wonderful years of carp fishing, “Fifty Years on the Ouse” in 2007, outlining fifty years of fishing his favourite river, and a reprint of his first ever book “Silver Season, Golden Memories” in 2010. This chronicles a blow by blow account of the 1984/85 season which, at the time, was Tony’s greatest ever.

In January 2013 Tony joined his lifelong friend Trefor West in the on-line Lone Angler business, backed by media entrepreneur Mike O’Neill, which offers top quality British manufactured tackle and bait that has been used and recommended by Tony and Trefor. He has been joined in this venture by another good friend, Simon Pomeroy, managing director of quality bait company Pallatrax.

Tony has stated that he enjoys his writing as much as ever and has stated that he will carry on writing as long as others wish to carry on reading what he has to say.

Big Fish from Small Streams is over 250 pages long, and is 170x250mm. It is LEP’s first full colour book, containing over 130 examples of Tony’s excellent photography. It is also richly illustrated by Tom O’Reilly.
