Hook, Line & Spinner by Clive Gammon

Angling is not an easy subject to write about; the pages are apt to become clogged with dull technicalities or, worse still, to appear self-consciously embarrassingly whimsical.
In his first book Clive Gammon avoids both these pitfalls with unerring gusto. Though he devotes a chapter to the technique of fishing for pike which he demonstrates in a fresh, lively and expert manner, this is not an instructional manual. His method is discursive, anecdotal-but never impractical. He conveys the delight and excitement of angling, not in an abstract way, but through stories of fishes and places.

The fishes in this book are mainly the (ineptly named) coarse ones — the Pike and the Tench especially, though there is a certain amount about trout and sea-trout. He writes effectively about his early infatuation with pike and about battles with some particularly heavy specimens; about Victorian fishing authors and changes of fashions in angling; about the acquisition of the fishing rights of a lake in Pembrokeshire that one day may well produce a record pike; about catching sea-trout from little rivers in Carmarthenshire, trying to defeat a monster Tench, and so on. . .
