In this brand new title Jim Gibbinson takes the reader
to gravel pits, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, dykes,
beaches and estuaries. He discusses in depth his pursuit
of carp, tench, pike, trout, cod, bass and mullet. With
diversions for perch, chub, barbel and roach along the
way.
While this is not intended to be an instructional book,
there is practical angling advice in abundance.
We get a behind-the-scenes look at angling on
television, and an insight into what it is like to be a
well-known angling writer.
Jim writes with honesty, frankness and humour. At times
he is controversial, and his acerbic observations have
the capacity to embarrass, annoy or amuse - depending on
the reader's point of view!
The test of a good angling book is whether it makes the
reader want to get out there and go fishing.
"A Glorious Waste of Time"
does exactly that.

From the book,
I am tempted to think that there is such a thing as a
fishing gene. Our bronzeage forebears had to fish, hunt,
farm or trade in order to survive, as did their
offspring, and theirs, and so on.
So could the need to fish have become an acquired
characteristic, hard-wired into our genetic make-up?
For that's what it is, a need, a fundamental
necessity for our emotional and mental well-being .
I was always going to be an angler, I had no choice in
the matter. I recall my maternal grandmother telling me
that as a three-year old, I liked nothing better than to
be taken in my pushchair to a jetty, that lay within a
few hundred yards of the flat where I lived in Thorpe
Bay.
There, apparently I would contentedly watch the flounder
fishermen for hours. . . |
